The Purpose and the law

WHY WE DO IT

The WEEE Directive came into effect in the European Union in 2003, covering a wide range of electronic products. In 2012, it was expanded to include numerous products related to consumables containing electrical circuits. The updated directive (2012/19/EU) imposes new obligations on manufacturers and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment.

Under the EU WEEE Directive, all manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment are required to finance the return, disposal, and recycling of devices they have placed on the market after their use. Products covered by the WEEE Directive are marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol (below), indicating that they should not be disposed of with municipal waste.
